Spent most of the day driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains and hiking
various trails within Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I was amazed
at just how green everything was. The tree cover is so dense that the
forest floor gets very little sunlight and is very moist. So moist that
much of the ground was covered in moss. I danced under waterfalls, lost
(broke) my walking stick, walked briefly along the Appalachian
Trail and drove for a bit along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Checked into the
crappiest Days Inn ever, the room felt very gross. Thankfully there was
plenty to do as I was staying in downtown Ashville. There are many bars
and cafes that stay open late...good to see a lively downtown district in
such a small city.
